Broadband Usage

Introduction

A free wired broadband connection is available in the Arun and Rother Halls for reasonable use by customers. Excessive bandwidth consuming activities such as downloading CD or DVD images are forbidden.

Caveat

Connecting to the internet can expose your computer to risk of infection by viruses, trojans and other malware. Be sure that you have taken appropriate precautions before connecting because the Social Centre will accept no responsibility should your machine become infected.

Usage

Connect your computer’s RJ45 network port to the wall socket using a straight through network cable. If you don’t have one, a 10m one can be borrowed from the office.

If you are running standard Windows ME or XP, start Internet Explorer, click Tools, click Internet Options and click the Connections tab. Ensure that Never dial a connection is selected.

Web browsing should then ‘just work’. If it doesn’t make sure that your computer’s network connection is set up to obtain an IP address automatically.
